Benefits of Counselling for LGBT Issues

LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans. Being LGBT does not automatically mean you will have mental health issues. However, LGBT people are at a greater risk of poor mental health and wellbeing. The reasons why there are higher rates of mental health issues among LGBT people are complex. Some experiences discrimination because of their sexuality or gender identity, others will often have to deal with as a minority community, such as stigma, prejudice and discrimination This can have an impact on LGBT individuals mental health.

Coming to terms with your sexuality and facing homophobic attitudes can have lasting effects in your mental health. In addition, the discrimination and stigma LGBT individuals often face can be a serious impediment to their well-being. Some LGBT individuals suffer rejection from their families or friends and, together, these experiences have the potential to cause significant psychological and emotional distress.

Though many counsellors may be qualified to help, sometimes LGBT individuals feel more comfortable with a gay, lesbian or bisexual therapist, or at least with a therapist who has a great deal of experience with LGBT issues. At LGBT Counselling Services, we understand the challenges of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and we offer a safe and non-judgemental environment in which you can explore these issues.
